The challenges music students often face

Many students struggle with ABRSM Music Theory because they lack a strong foundation and don't know how to approach the exam questions with confidence.

  • Theory feels confusing and overwhelming : Many students struggle because music theory can feel hard to "see" or understand at first.
  • They memorise but don't truly understand : Students often try to remember rules without knowing how they actually work in music.
  • We've tried YouTube videos and self-paced online courses, but there's no one to mark the work or explain where my child is going wrong.
  • Exam questions feel stressful : Even when students know the topic, applying it during exams can feel scary and confusing.
  • Weak foundations make learning harder : If note reading and rhythm are shaky, theory can quickly become frustrating.
  • Theory feels boring or intimidating : Many students lose confidence or motivation when theory starts feeling too difficult or dry.

Min Min Tay

Pianist, Educator & ABRSM Specialist

Min Min holds a Master Degree in Piano Performance (M Mus) from the University of Washington in Seattle, U.S.A, a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance (B Mus) from Ohio Wesleyan University, U.S.A, and graduated with University Honors. She also holds the Licentiate Trinity College of London (LTCL).

Trained under renowned pianist Ong Lip Tat, Min Min brings over a decade of dedicated teaching experience to every lesson. She has personally guided more than 100 students through ABRSM exams — from complete beginners to Grade 8 distinctions.

Her teaching philosophy is simple: music theory should feel musical, not mechanical. Rather than drilling rules in isolation, she connects every concept to real pieces, real sounds, and real playing. Students describe her as patient, intuitive, and refreshingly less rigid than typical exam-prep methods.

Whether you are a child sitting your first Grade 5 theory paper, an adult returning after 10 years, or a producer who finally wants to understand why chords work — she meets you exactly where you are.

Student TESTIMONIALS

Every happy student is a gentle reminder of why I teach.

Ms Tay, has helped me tremendously with my theory skills that were barely there when i started out. During the lessons she was patient and willing to revise and teach me the theory concepts that I have forgotten a long time ago.

Matthew

Flute Student

Ms Tay is my music theory teacher. All I wanted was to brush up on my rusty theory knowledge that I have not been 'in touched', and theories helps me importantly while singing. Her teaching is systematic and structured, and her patience is an understatement. All I need is do my homework regularly, no short cuts, no excuses.

Phylis

Professional Singer

My son has been learning from Min Min. He has advanced so much in term of technicality, musicality and knowledge in music theory. Min Min is a very patient teacher with strong background, she is very good at adapting teaching method to each individual's capacity of learning but also challenging them to improve. She plans the course well in advance in anticipating for piano exams so that the student will have time to go through a few rounds of simulated exam just before the real ones. I will definitely recommend Min Min to other parents or students who are planning to start their journey in music.
